Equipment

  • Cutting board
  • Knife
  • Prep bowls/measuring utensils
  • Cooking utensils
  • Frying pan

Ingredients

  • 1.25 lbs ground beef
  • 1/2 cup chopped yellow onion
  • 1 clove garlic minced
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp ground mustard
  • 1/4 tsp bell pepper seasoning (I use the Pampered Chef brand)
  • 1/8 tsp cayenne pepper
  • pinch smoked paprika
  • 1 1/2 tsp yellow mustard
  • 1 1/2 cups ketchup
  • 1 1/2 tsp brown sugar

Instructions

  • Brown ground beef in a large frying pan.
  • While the ground beef is cooking, dice onion and mince garlic. Set aside. Mix salt, black pepper, ground mustard, bell pepper seasoning, cayenne pepper, and smoked paprika in a small bowl. Set aside.
  • Drain excess grease from the pan once the meat is browned. Add onion and garlic. Cook over medium-low heat for 10 minutes.
  • Add seasoning mixture. Cook 1-2 minutes.
  • Add in remaining ingredients. Simmer for 5-10 minutes, stirring often.
  • Taste and adjust seasoning if needed. If the flavor is bland, add a few more drops of yellow mustard and/or a pinch of salt. Serve on soft hamburger rolls and enjoy!

Notes

  • If you prefer a saucier sloppy joe, add more ketchup to achieve desired consistency.
  • For more spice, double the cayenne pepper!
